Borrowing from mythology, religion, and theater, Jorge Marín’s sculptures combine the traditional in classical bronze sculpture with the tension and anxiety of the modern era.

The emotional intensity is as evident as the artistry in Marin’s sculptures. The poses are powerfully dramatic, and the facial expressions drawn taut. The religious underpinning in these bronzes seems evident, but not overwhelming.

Many of Marín’s figures wear a beaked mask, recalling the long-nosed masks of characters originating with the 16th century Commedia dell’Arte.  Masks serve multiple purposes. They protect: the Commedia doctor who stuffed his long nose with spices to protect against the plague, to the modern day gas mask. Masks can also disguise, conceal and even reflect someone’s likeness.

Truly a classic contemporary sculptor, Jorge, like many of his forbears, displays a highly developed ability to recreate the human physique. Marín’s characters most often appear active rather than static. They capture a moment, an instant frozen in time between both the fluid movement that came before and the action that will gracefully follow. Marín captures his characters at their apex.
